written by a contemporary lithuanian playwright marius ivaškevičius, the play "russian novel" is an important event at the intersection of eastern and western cultures. in 2017 this play directed by mindaugas karbauskis at the vladimir mayakovsky theater earned the most important russian theatre award golden mask as the best dramaturgical piece performed that year across russian theaters. it is being staged in lithuania for the first time.the play dwells on the story and last months of life of a world famous russian novelist lev tolstoy (1828–1910). in the centre of the play is writer’s wife sofia andrejevna, her fate and life upon turning into the wife of a world-class genius. the playwright m. ivaškevičius together with a director oskaras koršunovas interpret sofia’s character through the features of female heroes present in tolstoy writings, in particular ana karenina.
